Festive Reflections: Embracing Growth and Gratitude

November 28, 2023
The image is of a snowy path to represent using the holiday season as a time to reflect and figure out what journey you would like to be on in the coming year.

This is my favorite time of year. As I write this, my family is at the airport on our way to visit my brother and his family, marking the beginning of the holiday season – a time for relaxation and reflection. And in the business of recruiting, the period between Thanksgiving and Christmas (Hannukah for my crew) typically represents that last and final push of the year to make placements. And making placements is what makes our job as recruiters unique and rewarding. We get to change lives! And have fun in the process! …of course, it’s not always fun. This can be one of the most perplexing and frustrating jobs out there. But I wouldn’t have it any other way.

The Unique Essence of the Festive Season

The essence of the holiday season lies not only in food and football, but also moments of quiet introspection. It’s a time to pause and reflect on the year’s journey—its successes, challenges, and the personal growth experienced. In the world of recruiting, this reflective pause is akin to strategizing the final moves on a chessboard. It’s a time to assess the goals achieved and recalibrate strategies for the upcoming year. As recruiters, these weeks hold a special significance. It’s the crescendo of our efforts, the pinnacle before the year draws to a close. The urgency to place candidates in ideal roles intensifies, fueled by the shared desire to close the year on a high note.

Balancing Gratitude and Professional Urgency

Regardless of your role or profession – whoever you are, wherever you are, whatever you do: make sure to unplug and reflect during this season. Give thanks. Be present. Next year is not a given. The opportunities of tomorrow aren’t promised today. Let that sink in for a moment.

But let’s not get too sentimental. Having fun and laughing has been proven to increase your life/health/span *my footnotes are absent but do your own research because it’s legit. So make sure to laugh with family and friends. Crack jokes at the expense of your siblings. Be merry. We live in the greatest country in the world – despite what some may say.

Beyond Numbers: The Human Impact

Bringing this back to my corner of the world: what sets recruiting apart is the profound impact we have on people’s lives. Beyond the numbers and contracts, there’s a human story unfolding. The joy of witnessing a candidate embrace a new opportunity that transforms their career trajectory is unmatched. It’s these moments of change and growth that fuel our passion, reminding us of the meaningful ripple effect our work creates. How cool, right?

Integrating Reflection into Professional Growth

As we navigate through this festive season, let’s carry the spirit of gratitude and reflection into our professional lives. Consider your path, whether you’re a candidate exploring new avenues or a client shaping opportunities for others. If you’re not happy, ask yourself why. Before looking to anyone else, ask yourself: am I on the path I was destined for?

If not, why not pivot? Whether it’s through a recruiter or not (most likely change should start with the person in the mirror), deviate. Push yourself to become the woman or man you want to be. But do it with a smile because you’re destined to go further that way.

Reflecting on the spirit of transformation and professional growth discussed here, what’s one inspired action you aim to take as you step into the new year—whether it’s a personal goal, a professional pivot, or a change in approach to opportunities?

Share your thoughts with us! We’d love to hear about your aspirations and plans as you step into the new year.
