Location: Remote (Colorado Residents Preferred)
Compensation: $120,000 Base Salary
Position Overview
We are seeking an experienced Director of Tax & Accounting to join a growing boutique accounting and advisory firm serving small business clients. This is a hands-on leadership role that blends technical tax expertise, client advisory, accounting oversight, and team leadership.
The ideal candidate is an experienced CPA who enjoys building long-term client relationships, leading a collaborative team, and serving as a trusted advisor to business owners. This individual will oversee tax compliance, provide proactive tax planning, manage client accounting services, and help deliver an exceptional client experience.
Key Responsibilities
Tax Compliance & Planning
- Prepare approximately 400 individual and business tax returns annually.
- Review complex tax returns and ensure accuracy, quality, and timely filing.
- Provide proactive tax planning and strategic advice to business owners and select clients throughout the year.
- Stay current on federal and state tax regulations and communicate relevant changes to clients and staff.
Leadership of Accounting Services
- Oversee the Client Accounting Services (CAS) team, providing leadership, guidance, and technical support to accounting professionals.
- Review accounting work and financial statements to ensure accounting records are accurate and support sound tax reporting and financial decision-making.
- Mentor and coach accounting professionals while fostering a collaborative, high-performing culture.
- Promote effective communication across the firm, assist in improving internal processes, workflows, and client service delivery to support continued growth.
Client Relationship Management
- Serve as a primary tax planner for a portfolio of small business clients.
- Work directly with client onboarding team as tax expert, participate in onboarding process of new clients
- Build trusted, long-term relationships by understanding each client's business and providing responsive communication and practical financial guidance.
- Maintain consistent communication with approximately 400 tax clients throughout the year.
Qualifications
- Active CPA license required.
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting or related field.
- Approximately 10+ years of progressive public accounting experience.
- Experience advancing from Tax Accountant into a Manager or similar leadership role within a small or mid-sized public accounting firm.
- Extensive experience preparing and reviewing S Corporation, Partnership, and Individual tax returns.
- Strong tax planning and consulting experience with closely held businesses.
- Hands-on accounting experience supporting small businesses, including financial statement preparation and month-end accounting.
- Advanced proficiency with QuickBooks Online.
- Experience supervising accounting professionals and reviewing client accounting work.
